Jones Day is committed to recruiting, retaining, and promoting the best attorneys and law students from all backgrounds. To this end, our Diversity Task Force, chaired by Kevyn Orr, a Partner in our Washington Office, supports the U.S. offices and practice leaders in four primary areas: (1) entry-level recruitment, (2) lateral recruitment, (3) development and retention of minority and female attorneys, and (4) diversity awareness. Jones Day participates in a wide variety of activities aimed at increasing diversity within the legal profession and is continually looking for new opportunities and approaches to increasing diversity within the Firm.
We take part in numerous outreach activities to attract diverse attorneys, including:
- Participating in the Columbus Bar Association Minority Clerkship Program and the New York City Bar Association Minority Fellowship Program.
- Sponsoring the Morehouse-Spelman Intern Program.
- Sponsoring and participating in minority-recruiting events and conferences at numerous law schools, such as the Harvard Black Law Students Association ("BLSA") Annual Spring Conference and Job Fair, the Stanford BLSA Fall Conference, the Chicago Council of BLSA's First Annual Chicago Renaissance Gala, and the Annual Northeast BLSA Convention.
- Participating each year in the National Asian Pacific American Conference on Law and Public Policy at Harvard Law School.
- Participating in the Boalt Hall Women's Association reception honoring women in the law.
- Contributing support to various minority law student associations, nationally and at individual law schools, including but not limited to the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, the National Latina/Latino Law Student Association, and NBLSA.
- Participating in major regional minority job fairs including the Cook County (Illinois) Bar Association Minority Lawyer Conference, the NBLSA Northern California Job Fair at the University of San Francisco, and the NBLSA Western Region Job Fair at UCLA.
- Sponsoring and sending minority lawyers to participate in minority-recruiting events that are designed to allow our lawyers to share their career-development paths and job-search tips with minority law students. In recent years, Jones Day lawyers have attended such events held at UC Berkeley, New York University, Georgetown, the University of Illinois, Stanford, and the University of Michigan.
Jones Day also participates in and sponsors a number of national conferences and programs dedicated to developing and implementing methods of increasing diversity within the legal profession, including:
- The ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession.
- The Minority Corporate Counsel Association's annual Creating Pathways to Diversity Conference.
- The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association's Annual Conference.
- The ABA's National Conference for Minority Lawyers.
- The ABA Conference of Minority Partners in Majority Corporate Law Firms.
- The Hispanic National Bar Association annual convention.
Jones Day is a signatory to various minority-hiring goals established by local bar associations in Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. In addition, a number of offices are actively involved in local initiatives to increase diversity within the bar. For example, our Columbus Office, along with other area law firms, participates in the Managing Partners' Diversity Initiative. Similarly, our Los Angeles Office joined several L.A.-area law firms in forming a Managing Partners' Roundtable whose goal is to improve hiring and retention of minority and female lawyers in the Los Angeles region.
