Edward Patrick Swan, Jr. receives 2023 Hon. David H. Bartick Award for Civility and Professionalism

Edward Patrick Swan, Jr. has been selected as the 2023 recipient of the Hon. David H. Bartick Award for Civility and Professionalism by the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. Resident in the Firm's San Diego Office, Mr. Swan is a member of the Business & Tort Litigation Practice, and has been a trial lawyer for more than 40 years.

The Hon. David H. Bartick Award is named after Magistrate Judge Bartick, a federal jurist who was respected in the San Diego legal community for his civility and professionalism. In announcing Mr. Swan's selection, the court noted: "Pat has developed an untarnished reputation for civility and professionalism. He has continually improved the practice of law, promoted civility, fostered relationships, and mentored the next generation of San Diego lawyers."

In addition to his work promoting civility through service in various roles as President of the San Diego Federal Bar Association, President of the San Diego County Bar Foundation, Master of the Welsh Inn of Court, lecturer at University of San Diego School of Law, and Director for Voices for Children, among many other community service appointments, the court also recognized Mr. Swan for his work within the Firm. The court cited his creation of a civility training program for associates, in which he shares his insights on handling difficult situations and coaches associates on methods to use in their own practices. He also serves as the Pro Bono Coordinator for the San Diego Office, in which capacity he recently traveled with first-year associates to Texas to provide legal consultation to detained asylum seekers.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of California has installed a permanent display in the lobby of the Carter/Keep Courthouse which includes a remembrance of the Hon. David H. Bartick, and lists the names of the recipients of the award given in his memory. It bears this inscription:

Long before he became a beloved U.S. Magistrate Judge, David Bartick epitomized civility and professionalism. As a prominent criminal-defense attorney, he captivated juries and judges alike with his courtroom skill. But what really set him apart was his courtesy, warmth, and integrity. He was a lawyer that made us proud of lawyers. And he was the kind of judge that all judges aspire to be. With this award, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California honors Judge Bartick’s legacy. Each of these recipients followed in his footsteps, exemplifying civility and professionalism in the practice of law.
