February 2010

Washington, DC -- Jones Day has announced that the following four new partners have joined the Firm’s California offices, strengthening the Firm’s statewide capabilities in the key practice areas of Health Care, Intellectual Property, and Mergers & Acquisitions.

- Tim Curry is an M&A partner who joins our Silicon Valley Office from O’Melveny & Myers.

- James Dutro is a Health Care partner who joins our San Francisco Office from Latham & Watkins.

- Patrick Elsevier is an Intellectual Property partner who joins our San Diego Office from Alston & Bird in Atlanta.

- Ken Funahashi is an M&A partner who joins our San Diego Office from Baker & McKenzie.

"We’re proud that these outstanding lawyers have decided to join the growing team of professionals providing global legal services from our five California offices," said Joe Sims, the Jones Day partner responsible for coordinating the Firm's activities in California. "We've had a presence in California for nearly four decades, but over the last three years we have more than doubled the number of lawyers in our five California locations.  We expect to continue to recruit both outstanding law students and experienced lawyers as we steadily improve our capacity to serve our clients in California."

Tim Curry was formerly the Transactional Department Head of O’Melveny’s Silicon Valley office. He handles general corporate, mergers and acquisitions, securities, and corporate governance matters, focusing on the representation of emerging growth and public technology companies in public offerings, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital financings, and licensing and partnering transactions. Tim also represents investment banks in public equity and debt offerings, as well as companies and venture capitalists in venture financings. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, with honors, and his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

James Dutro was formerly a partner in Latham & Watkins' San Francisco office and a member of the Firm's Health Care Practice. He focuses on representing hospitals, health systems, and other health care services providers in connection with various types of transactional and regulatory matters, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, financing transactions, and other complex business transactions and arrangements. James has extensive experience in structuring, negotiating, and implementing integrated health care delivery systems and other hospital-physician alignment transactions and arrangements. James has been recognized by Nightingale's Healthcare News as one of the "Outstanding Young Health Care Lawyers" in the U.S. in 2004, and as one of 12 "Outstanding Hospital Lawyers" in the U.S. in 2008.  He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Davis, and his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Patrick Elsevier, Ph.D. was formerly a partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation Group of Alston & Bird's Atlanta office. Dr. Elsevier's practice focuses on biotechnology patent litigation involving some of the most successful vaccine and therapeutic biologics for clinical use and in animal health products. He also advises biotechnology, pharmaceutical and animal health clients on patent strategy, freedom to operate issues, and intellectual property related agreements. Dr. Elsevier is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He received his B.S. in chemistry from Spring Hill College in 1992, where he was selected as a Presidential Scholar, his Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Emory University in 1996, and his J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1999, where he was selected as a Woodruff Scholar and a notes editor of the Georgia Law Review.

Ken Funahashi was formerly in the San Diego office of Baker & McKenzie, where he was a partner in that firm’s Corporate and Securities Practice Group.  He represents a number of Japanese, Asian, and European corporations that engage in investment and business operations in the United States, and has handled more than 35 transactions in the last five years with an aggregated dollar value in excess of $5 billion. His practice covers a breadth of corporate finance matters, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, private and public equity financing, joint ventures, and strategic alliances. Ken received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.B.A and J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In addition to these four new lateral partners, four "up from the ranks" lawyers have joined the partnership in California -- Jane Froyd (Intellectual Property) and Peggy Ward (Antitrust & Competition Law) in our Silicon Valley Office, and Eric Swanholt (Product Liability & Tort Litigation) and Erica Reilly (Issues & Appeals) in our Los Angeles Office, and Mike McFalls (Antitrust & Competition Law) has transferred from our Washington Office to our Silicon Valley Office.
