Steve Scanlon oversees the mechanical patent prosecution practice in the Firm's Cleveland Office. This covers all phases of preparation and prosecution of patent applications through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and other national patent offices worldwide, including reissue and reexamination procedures, appeals to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences at the USPTO, and opposition practice at the European Patent Office. His practice also includes counseling on strategy for developing and maintaining U.S. and international patent portfolios, and he frequently provides Jones Day's intellectual property clients with opinions on patentability, validity, and infringement in technologies that vary from mechanical and electrical to chemical and pharmaceutical subject matter. Steve's work at Jones Day further includes training and supervision for associates in the patent prosecution practice.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Steve was a partner for eight years at a Cleveland intellectual property firm where he gained extensive experience with patents for automotive technologies, including power steering and suspension systems, occupant restraint systems, and air bag deployment systems. Steve has also worked with fiber optics, medical instruments, engineering materials, and offset printing presses and operating systems. His engineering background includes experience as a structural engineer on several major construction projects in New York, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Detroit.
Steve is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Cleveland Engineering Society.
