Welcome to the inaugural issue of ONE Connection, the newsletter for Jones Day's alumni.
With the nation and world focused on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it is a time for thinking of others, our loved ones, those we work with, and those in our larger Jones Day family. These times give us an even greater appreciation for the relationships we have formed and the bonds that we share. It is a challenging time to be sure, but one that shows the strengths of our Jones Day community, both internally and with our clients.
There is no better time than now to connect with you through this new quarterly newsletter and share a mixture of Firm and alumni news. Through ONE Connection, we hope to bring our Jones Day family closer together during these challenging times and for the long term.
Jones Day's culture, strength, and success over the last 127 years is predicated on the strong relationships between our lawyers and the clients that we have been fortunate to represent. Our mission statement is clear: ONE Connection is designed to inform and engage the Jones Day community, current and past, regarding Firm news, accomplishments, people, and programs, all in an effort to grow, support, and learn from one another, while bringing us all closer together.
In this issue, we shine an Alumni Spotlight on Justice Elwood Lui. A beloved former member of the Firm, who held several leadership positions from 1987 to 2015, Elwood is now the Administrative Presiding Judge in California's Court of Appeal in Los Angeles. We also check in with Veronica Dragalin, a former Jones Day associate who emigrated with her family to America at age 11, not speaking a word of English. She now proudly raises her hand on behalf of the United States as an Assistant U.S. Attorney prosecuting public corruption cases in Los Angeles. And we also include a recorded interview with Dick Pogue, the former Managing Partner, who reflects on some of his proudest moments at the Firm.
As Jones Day continues to grow in size and geographic breadth, at the dawn of the new decade in January, we added several new members to the Partnership Committee: Heather Lennox (Partner-in-Charge of the Cleveland Office), Lee DeJulius (Partner-in-Charge of the New York Office), the London-based Giles Elliott (one of the Firm's most experienced transactional lawyers in Europe), Atlanta-based Stephanie Parker (Practice Leader of the Firm's largest practice, Business & Tort Litigation), and Chris Lovrien in Los Angeles (the former Partner-in-Charge of the California Region, who has made a number of important contributions since signing on as a summer associate in the Washington Office in 1997).
We have assembled a multidisciplinary team across the globe to help clients navigate the challenges presented by COVID-19 and the changing regulatory and business environments around the world. Our Coronavirus webpage on the Firm website houses some of our recent Insights.
Our new Financial Markets Practice is emblematic of the Firm's commitment to evolving in order to serve our clients' ever-changing needs. An amalgam of the Banking, Finance & Securities Practice and the Financial Institutions Litigation & Regulation Practice, the new Financial Markets Practice, which debuted in January, is the Firm's fully integrated group with more than 300 lawyers advising banks and other financial market participants on a full range of cross-border financial transactions, regulatory matters, investigations, and litigations. The Practice Leader is Jay Tambe in New York, in conjunction with Brett Barragate, also in New York, who is the Financial Markets Chair, Americas, and the Paris-based Alban Caillemer du Ferrage, Financial Markets Chair, EMEA and APAC.
Our pro bono work continues to generate wins for clients. Recent initiatives include the Laredo Project (led by Laura Tuell in Washington), which strives to provide access to justice and adherence to the rule of law for asylum-seekers under the Migrant Protection Protocols, and our global anti-human trafficking initiative (led by Laura Ellsworth in Pittsburgh), which promotes unprecedented collaboration between the Firm, our clients, law enforcement, and others to prevent and prosecute crimes involving the sex trade, forced labor, and similar exploitation.
In the spirit of staying connected and learning from each other, please share with us your news and any questions or suggestions you have so that we can address or highlight them in future newsletters. We can be reached via email at alumni@jonesday.com.
We look forward to connecting with you, and hope that you and your loved ones are safe and in good health.
