Jones Day named among Bloomberg Law's 2023 Pro Bono Innovators
Jones Day was named among Bloomberg Law's 2023 Pro Bono Innovators, "a selection of law firms, companies and non-profits that embody innovation and dedication in their pro bono work for the underserved." The Firm was recognized for its long-running Border Project, a Firmwide pro bono initiative to provide asylum-seekers with access to the rule of law, and its co-founding of the Eradicate Hate Global Summit, which is now the largest multidisciplinary gathering of anti-hate experts in the world.
The Firm has demonstrated a sustained and deep commitment to fighting for access to the rule of law for refugees from around the world. In 2014, Jones Day began its Unaccompanied Children ("UAC") Project to provide legal services to detained women and unaccompanied children. The Firm expanded its commitment to asylum-seekers in 2017 by launching the Laredo Project, an innovative pro bono initiative that maintains a full-time office in Laredo, Texas. The Firm's lawyers provide Know-Your-Rights presentations, prepare refugees for credible fear interviews, and provide individualized case assessments to individuals detained at Laredo-area detention centers who otherwise have no access to legal services. They also provide Know-Your-Rights presentations to migrants in local shelters who have been recently admitted to the United States.
The Eradicate Hate Summit was founded in Pittsburgh following the 2018 killings at the Tree of Life synagogue—the largest loss of life in an antisemitic attack in U.S. history. The aim was to bring together multidisciplinary experts from around the world to work on targeted solutions to counter hate-fueled violence of all kinds, whether based on religion, race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, or any other classification. Now a standalone organization, the summit houses 25 working groups, composed of over 300 global experts, each working on targeted anti-hate solutions in sectors including law, medicine, tech, education, advertising, law enforcement, journalism, and the financial sector.
Bloomberg Law's Pro Bono Innovators were evaluated by editors who "(explored) how nominees employed creative strategic approaches to solve pressing issues for their clients that often impacted their quality of life," and "the impact and breadth of the client matters, as well as the pro bono success history of the nominees."
