China Petrochemical prevails in three leading patent infringement cases in Taiwan
Client(s) China Petrochemical Development Corporation
Jones Day successfully represented China Petrochemical Development Corporation (CPDC), a leading publicly listed company in Taiwan, in its settlement with Celanese International Corporation (CIC) after five years of litigation related to three patent infringement lawsuits against CPDC. The Firm successfully reversed two district court judgments unfavorable to CPDC, in which compensation for damages reached NTD 2 billion (approximately USD 62,500,000) and NTD 1 billion (approximately USD 31,250,000), respectively. These two amounts are the highest and second highest damage awards in Taiwan patent infringement litigation to date. In addition, the third lawsuit was reversed and final judgment was won in the Taiwan Supreme Court. Given the amounts in dispute and the complexity of the merits, these three suits are considered the leading patent infringement cases in Taiwan Court.
