Summer Associates raise big hair and money at DC charity bartending event

A summer crop of mustaches, beards, and assorted interesting hairstyles were sacrificed for the benefit of leukemia and lymphoma research on July 16 at Jones Day's fifth annual Washington Summer Associate Charity Bartending Event. Fake "staches" were available at the door for those just too busy to grow their own.
Partners and associates also indulged in karaoke, humorous makeovers, and other donation-generating stunts to raise a total of over $20,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The evening was dedicated to Sarah Tran, a Georgetown law student and Jones Day law clerk whose treatment for acute myeloid leukemia prevented her from joining this summer's class.
"I salute our summer associates for the diligence and creativity they showed in raising money for a very good and exceptional cause," said Greg Shumaker, Jones Day's firmwide hiring partner.
"We started the charity bartending event a few years ago as a way to foster teambuilding in our summer associate class. Each summer the event has grown, and this year we had a personal cause for the fundraising effort. We are pleased to have raised so much money in Sarah's honor," said Julie McEvoy, Jones Day's Washington office hiring partner.
The annual event promotes teamwork among the summer associates as well as raising money for good causes. Last year's class pulled in $20,000 for the benefit of Legal Aid. Prior fund-raisers yielded $2,000 for the CCNV (Center for Creative Non-Violence) Shelter in 2004, $4,200 for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) in 2005, and $14,000 for My Sister's Place (a local shelter for victims of domestic violence) in 2006.
