Jones Day negotiates favorable settlement for pro bono client in landlord-tenant dispute
Client(s) Client K. I.
Jones Day associates Courtney Snyder, Johanna Schwartz Miralles and Ben Verney successfully resolved a claim brought against a residential tenant in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.
At the time Jones Day took the matter, the parties had been embroiled in litigation for almost a year. The landlord-plaintiff sought damages in excess of three times the rent he claimed that the tenant failed to pay, and had relentlessly pursued the claim against his former tenant, who was trying to mount her defense pro se.
Jones Day's investigation of the case revealed that the apartment was not in conformance with health department rules and regulations and established that the landlord had no basis in law for the bulk of his demands. Having brought these facts to light, we fought for and obtained a favorable settlement. The case was referred to Jones Day by Neighborhood Legal Services Association, a Pittsburgh-based non-profit public interest law firm that provides civil legal assistance to low-income and vulnerable residents of Western Pennsylvania.
