Aetna attempts acquisition of Humana
Client(s) Aetna Inc.
Jones Day represented Aetna Inc. as antitrust counsel in its attempted $37 billion acquisition of fellow health insurer Humana Inc. The transaction, which would have combined Aetna's commercial clients (primarily employers) and Humana's Medicare business, involved a lengthy antitrust investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and several weeks of trial before a District of Columbia federal judge. The parties decided not to move forward with the merger after the court sided with the DOJ's arguments to block the transaction.
