Nationwide bakery company resolves dispute arising from independent distributor

Client(s) Nationwide bakery company

Jones Day represented a nationwide bakery in a threatened wrongful death action. An Alabama distributor of bakery products shot and killed a 16-year-old who allegedly stole items from the distributor’s truck. The distributor was criminally charged with manslaughter and was convicted in May 2018. The family of the victim threatened to bring litigation against the national bakery on the grounds that it was civilly responsible for the actions of the distributor. The matter was settled prior to litigation.
