Appellant prevails in Seventh Circuit prisoner-rights appeal

Jones Day successfully represented the appellant in a prisoner-rights case in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. After sustaining serious injuries while in state prison, the appellant asserted Eighth Amendment claims against two prison doctors for failing to provide adequate health care. The district court refused to appoint pro bono counsel and then granted summary judgment to the defendants. On appeal, the Seventh Circuit appointed Jones Day to represent the appellant. After briefing and argument, the court reversed, holding that the district court abused its discretion by failing to appoint counsel to assist with discovery and trial.
