U.S. Steel defeats trespass litigation relating to Minnesota iron mining operations
Client(s) United States Steel Corporation
Jones Day successfully defended United States Steel Corporation against a lawsuit brought by a mineral rights owner alleging trespass and nuisance claims relating to U.S. Steel's mining operations along the Iron Range in northern Minnesota. Seeking to use the lawsuit as commercial leverage to re-negotiate its various mineral leases with U.S. Steel, the plaintiff sought an injunction in Minnesota state court that would have threatened U.S. Steel's continued mining operations. After an evidentiary hearing with fact and expert witnesses, the court denied the plaintiff's motion for a temporary injunction and granted U.S. Steel's motion to dismiss, with prejudice.
