Disabled man obtains settlement of more than $1 million in police brutality case
Client(s) Client M
Jones Day represented client M, a young man with cerebral palsy, and his grandmother in a Section 1983 matter against the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the Prince George's County Police Department, and many individual officers related to an excessive force case. During prior periods, Jones Day won three motions to dismiss in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Jones Day has also been successful in several discovery disputes, uncovered substantial evidence of spoliation by the county, and successfully reduced the Medicaid lien our clients were facing from over a million dollars to approximately $8,000. Jones Day took six depositions structured strategically to maximize settlement pressure. The Firm's efforts resulted in a cumulative settlement of more than $1 million from the police departments.
