After three weeks of trial, Jones Day client Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Inc. (sister company to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company) obtained a complete defense verdict from a jury in state court in Portland, Oregon in a personal injury case regarding a smoker's bladder cancer diagnosis.
Plaintiffs asserted that Santa Fe's cigarettes were defectively and negligently designed, and that Santa Fe engaged in fraud. Plaintiffs sought $170 million in damages from the defendants, including $20 million in compensatory damages plus an additional $150 million in punitive damages. After deliberating for two days, the jury returned a complete defense verdict for Santa Fe.
