Parker Hannifin resolves claims arising from commercial airliner crash near Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt

Jones Day represented Parker Hannifin Corporation to resolve over 280 claims by predominately French family members arising from the crash of Flash Air Flight 604, a commercial airliner, into the Red Sea near Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt.
Families of deceased passengers initially filed claims in 2004 in the United States District Court for the Central District of California against the company and three other United States-based defendants. After the California court granted defendants' motion to dismiss those lawsuits based on forum non conveniens, plaintiffs refiled their lawsuit in the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Bobigny, France. After several rounds of complex procedural litigation, the French Supreme Court ultimately ruled that the litigation should remain in France. A settlement in principle was then reached involving the U.S. manufacturers and most of the plaintiffs. On September 20, 2016, the French court entered an order confirming that all remaining proceedings have lapsed.
