Jones Day awarded California Litigation Department of the Year
The Firm received The American Lawyer's "California Litigation Department of the Year" award for 2023 as part of the annual American Lawyer Industry Awards event in New York. The award recognizes litigation results that demonstrate excellence in representing a firm's clients on matters led by California litigation lawyers on "high-stakes matters, setting important precedent and providing exceptional lawyering."
The Jones Day team in California continued its track record of success in litigating and defending bet-the-company cases across industries, jurisdictions, and case types. Examples include a major jury win for a pharmaceutical company against a health care insurer seeking more than $700 million in compensatory damages and up to $6 billion in punitive damages for off label prescriptions it covered; a unanimous jury defense verdict in a landmark antitrust class action lawsuit where more than a $1 billion was sought by plaintiffs against a hospital; preventing FDA attempted overreach related to bodily autonomy in an attempt to assert regulatory authority over cutting edge stem cell therapies; winning summary judgment in two consolidated antitrust class actions in which plaintiffs sought a combined $72 billion in treble damages; and winning a permanent injunction prohibiting regulatory enforcement that would prevent pregnant Californians from obtaining certain prenatal screening from laboratories that did not contract with the State.
