Dean Bao joins Jones Day in Sydney as of counsel in Financial Markets Practice

Dean Bao has joined the Firm as of counsel in the Financial Markets Practice. He will be based in Sydney.

Mr. Bao advises financial institutions, sponsors, and corporates on infrastructure, project, corporate, and acquisition finance transactions. He has worked on some of the largest projects in Australia, including a US$1.3 billion financing package for a major acquisition, the refinancing of a large wind farm project and an AU$1.1 billion term loan financing for an acquisition. He has also advised Chinese lenders and borrowers on a variety of cross-border financings, including project finance, acquisition finance, and export credit finance. Mr. Bao is fluent in English and Mandarin.

"Dean has extensive experience advising clients in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region on a wide range of cross-border financings, particularly in the energy sectors," said Alban Caillemer du Ferrage, who chairs the EMEA and APAC regions of the Firm's Financial Markets Practice. At Jones Day, Mr. Bao joins a team of nearly 320 lawyers worldwide in the Financial Markets Practice, who advise clients on the full range of complex cross-border financial transactions, regulatory matters, investigations, and litigation. The Firm's Financial Markets Practice has helped clients close more than $1 trillion in financing transactions over the last five years, including many precedent-setting financings.

The Financial Markets Practice represents a diverse client base of global financial institutions, issuers, borrowers, funds, asset managers and fintech companies.

Mr. Bao's move to Jones Day follows the arrival of Alastair Gourlay in Sydney. Mr. Gourlay, an experienced banking and finance lawyer, joined Jones Day in April as a partner in the Financial Markets Practice.

Mr. Bao earned his bachelor of laws degree and bachelor of commerce degree from Monash University in Melbourne. He also studied in the Chinese language programs at Nanjing University and Beijing Language and Culture University in China. Mr. Bao was named to Best Lawyers' "Ones to Watch" for Banking and Finance (2023) and to Asia-Pacific Legal 500's "Rising Stars" for Project Finance in Australia (2022).
