MathWorks wins copyright and patent infringement cases

On behalf of The MathWorks, Inc., Jones Day prevailed in two separate patent and copyright infringement actions involving MathWorks' MATLAB software. In 2011, The MathWorks, Inc. brought two lawsuits against AccelerEyes LLC (as well as its principals and resellers) to enforce its intellectual property. MathWorks brought a suit in the Eastern District of Texas to enforce copyrights on its MATLAB software, including the commands that are part of MATLAB's user interface and the MATLAB source code. MathWorks brought a separate patent and trademark infringement suit in the Northern District of Illinois. Just before trial, the defendants accepted consent judgments in both lawsuits. The courts entered judgments in MathWorks' favor, finding that defendants had engaged in patent and copyright infringement. Both courts also entered injunctions against defendants.
