Jones Day secures asylum for Guatemalan refugee
Client(s) Guatemalan refugee
Jones Day's San Francisco office successfully represented a Guatemalan refugee in removal proceedings, resulting in a grant of asylum. The client, an ethnically Mayan woman, was brutally raped and beaten by three strangers on account of her race. After the police refused to help her, her attackers continued to threaten and stalk her and her family. The client fled to the United States, but was arrested at the border. As an asylee, she may now live and work permanently in the U.S. and eventually apply for citizenship.
