R.J. Reynolds obtains complete defense verdict following three-week jury trial

Jones Day client R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company obtained a complete defense verdict following a three-week jury trial. Co-defendant Philip Morris USA Inc. also obtained a defense verdict. The plaintiff, Juana Gonzalez, was the surviving spouse of Agustin Gonzalez, a life-long smoker born and raised in Cuba who immigrated to the United States with his family in 1980. Mrs. Gonzalez alleged claims related to Mr. Gonzalez's COPD, lung cancer and death in 2010. Plaintiff's counsel sought over $40 million in wrongful death and other damages.
