Ricoh resolves Lanham Act case involving its global "imagine. change." tagline in D. Minn.
Client(s) Ricoh Company, Ltd. and Ricoh USA, Inc.
Jones Day defended Ricoh Co., Ltd. and Ricoh USA, Inc. in a Lanham Act case in the District of Minnesota in which a commercial printing company accused Ricoh of infringing certain trademarks owned by the plaintiff. The case cut to the heart of Ricoh's global branding strategy, as Ricoh's use of its "imagine. change." tagline—used on virtually all of Ricoh's branding worldwide—was the focus of the plaintiff's infringement claim. The dispute involved proceedings in District Court and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). Less than a year after the case was filed, Jones Day was able to drive the case to resolution and a stipulated dismissal during fact discovery.
