Venezuelan woman and her children obtain asylum

On February 6, 2020, Jones Day successfully persuaded an immigration judge to grant asylum for client A and her son and daughter based on their persecution at the hands of the Venezuelan government for client A's political opinions.

Client A was persecuted by the Venezuelan government because of her role in organizing and marching at the front lines of protests against the Maduro regime and because of her membership in Voluntad Popular, a progressive pro-democracy political party. Client A and her children were forced to flee Venezuela after they were attacked by and received multiple death threats from the "colectivos," a government-sponsored paramilitary group, as well as official government security forces.

Client A and her children were overjoyed at the result of their hearing and exceptionally grateful to the attorneys at Jones Day. The trial team's victory is part of the continued success Jones Day's Laredo Project has had representing clients under the new Migrant Protection Protocols ("MPP"), which fast tracks asylum cases by conducting trials by videoconference from converted container box facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border in Laredo, Texas.
