Jones Day's Richard H. Deane, Jr., installed as President of the American College of Trial Lawyers; Jeff Schenk inducted as a Fellow
Jones Day is pleased to announce that of counsel Richard H. Deane, Jr. (Rick) was installed as the President of the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL). Additionally, partner Jeff Schenk was inducted as a Fellow. With Mr. Schenk's admission, there are now nine Jones Day lawyers who are current Fellows.
ACTL is an organization of exceptional trial lawyers of diverse backgrounds from the United States and Canada. Members are selected by invitation only and have demonstrated the very highest standards of trial advocacy, ethical conduct, integrity, professionalism, and collegiality.
"It is a great honor to serve as the 75th President of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and I look forward to working on behalf of the more than 5,700 Fellows across the U.S. and Canada to further the College's mission to improve the standards of trial practice, professionalism, ethics, and the administration of justice," said Mr. Deane.
Mr. Deane is a highly experienced trial lawyer who represents clients facing all types of criminal or civil investigations by the Department of Justice and other investigative agencies. He has extensive experience in federal grand jury investigations, trying cases in state and federal courts, and appearing before the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal. He is the former Partner-in-Charge of the Jones Day Atlanta Office and former co-chair of the Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice. Mr. Deane has been a Fellow of the ACTL since 2008, and he is the first African American to serve as its President.

Prior to joining Jones Day, Mr. Deane served under President Clinton as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, where he built on the legacy of diverse hiring begun by his predecessor, adding women and lawyers of color to help the office reflect the community it served. He also had a keen focus on prosecuting notorious sex traffickers who preyed on women and children, leading Time magazine to list him among its "100 Innovators" for his creative use of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statutes to prosecute those cases.
In addition to his membership in the ACTL, Mr. Deane is a past president of the National Association of Former United States Attorneys. He was chosen by the State Bar of Georgia's bench and bar committee as the lawyer recipient of the 12th annual Chief Justice Thomas O. Marshall Professionalism Award, the Atlanta Bar Association's Leadership Award, and also the Thomas J. Waldrop Truth & Justice Award. He recently received the Atlanta Business Chronicle's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mr. Schenk is an experienced trial lawyer who successfully litigated some of the most high-profile cases in recent years. His practice includes conducting internal investigations involving criminal and civil issues, particularly within the technology (including artificial intelligence) and life sciences space, and he also leads the defense of companies through complex business litigation and alleged violations of federal law.
Before joining Jones Day, Mr. Schenk served in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California and for the Southern District of California where he tried more than a dozen federal jury trials to verdict. Among other matters, he led the separate jury trials of the CEO and COO of Theranos, Inc., obtaining successful jury verdicts in both.
Mr. Schenk currently serves on the Federal Bar Association's national White Collar Committee and speaks regularly on issues related to white collar crime and investigations.
