Chevron defends against allegations of environmental damage from oil seeps off coast of Brazil
Client(s) Chevron Corporation
Jones Day is serving as lead U.S. counsel for Chevron with respect to various legal and administrative proceedings arising out of oil seeps that occurred off the coast of Brazil in November 2011 and March 2012. Along with private class-action lawsuits, there are federal and state civil actions seeking billions of dollars for alleged environmental damages, and related criminal charges against Chevron Brazil and several of its employees. In addition to providing strategic advice, Jones Day is coordinating closely with local Brazilian counsel regarding Chevron's defense across the various proceedings. These efforts achieved settlement of a significant portion of the civil charges and dismissal of the entire criminal complaint.
