Mexican immigrant secures release from ICE detention facility due to increased risk of serious illness from COVID-19
Client(s) J. G.
At the request of The Legal Aid Society of Greater Cleveland, Jones Day recently secured the release of a Mexican immigrant with underlying health conditions from ICE detention. Within days of receiving the case, Jones Day filed a motion for bond, and supporting papers, with the Immigration Court in Cleveland. Jones Day represented the client at his bond hearing and argued that his underlying health conditions placed him at an increased risk if he were to contract COVID-19 in the detention facility. The court agreed and set the client's bond at an unusually low amount. Jones Day arranged support for the bond from the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, and our client was released this week. He is currently quarantining himself at his home in Akron. Prior to his release, the client had been in detention since February following a car accident, which alerted ICE to his presence in the country.
