Victim of hate crime awarded $350,000
Client(s) Mone, Shareese
Jones Day represented Shareese Mone, a transgender woman, who was the victim of a brutal hate crime in the summer of 2019. Ms. Mone’s car was rammed and then she was attacked in broad daylight by a man who repeatedly hurled slurs at her while punching her in the face. While her attacker was arrested and pled guilty to assault, prosecutors dropped the hate crime charges against him. This left Ms. Mone with a feeling that the justice system neither valued her nor appreciated the impact of hate crimes on the transgender community. To help remedy this, Jones Day filed a civil complaint on behalf of Ms. Mone against her attacker. Following witness testimony and oral argument, the Firm secured a judgment for Ms. Mone of $50,000 in compensatory and $300,000 in punitive damages.
