Hate crime victims obtains victory in criminal case
Client(s) Kristofer Goldsmith; L.M.; K.M.
Jones Day represented Kristofer Goldsmith, a veteran who founded a non-profit to combat extremism and hate groups. Mr. Goldsmith and his parents were the targets of threats and harassment motivated by antisemitism and neo-Nazi ideology. We counseled our clients from the start of the threats, securing no-contact orders, meeting with law enforcement, and collecting and providing evidence of the crime to the local District Attorney’s office. The State of North Carolina subsequently brought a felony charge under a novel application of an underutilized statute and successfully obtained a conviction and active sanction. Jones Day’s team supported our clients through the criminal trial where they were called to testify as witnesses.
