
Intellectual Property litigators Edward Reines and Derek Walter join Jones Day in Northern California
Edward Reines and Derek Walter will join Jones Day as partners in the Firm's Intellectual Property Practice. Mr. Reines will be based in Silicon Valley and Dr. Walter in San Francisco. Both are widely recognized as leading trial lawyers for intellectual property disputes with a focus on companies in the life sciences, biotech, and high technology industries. In just the last week, Mr. Reines and Dr. Walter secured a reversal of a $96 million jury verdict in a case related to organ transplant testing in the District of Delaware.
A first-chair trial lawyer and trusted appellate advocate, Mr. Reines has extensive experience in competitor vs. competitor disputes. His notable achievements include winning a $45 million verdict in a Lanham Act false advertising lawsuit regarding diagnostic tests for organ transplant rejection, a $24 million verdict in a case related to prenatal genetic testing methods, and a complete summary judgment in a sprawling multidistrict patent litigation. He is recognized as a top litigator and thought leader in the patent field having been named an MVP by Law360 twice, "General Patent Litigator of the Year" by LMG Life Sciences, among the "Top 100 Lawyers in California" by The Daily Journal three times, and among its "Top IP Lawyers in California" multiple times since 2008.
Dr. Walter's practice focuses on technologies in the biological and chemical disciplines. He, with Mr. Reines, secured a $24 million verdict regarding prenatal genetic testing methods and a $27 million jury verdict in a case related to microfluidic droplet technology. Dr. Walter has also had numerous successes before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board for both patent owners and petitioners. Recently, he led the teams that invalidated patents in areas related to CRISPR technology and single cell genomics. Dr. Walter is a widely recognized leading patent litigator having been named an "MVP" by Law360 in Life Sciences, among the "Top IP Lawyers in California" by The Daily Journal, and a "Leading Lawyer" by Legal 500.

Mr. Reines earned a B.S. degree from SUNY Albany and his J.D. from Columbia Law School. He is Past-President of the Federal Circuit Bar Association and Past-President of the Federal Bar Association's Northern District of California Chapter, and he teaches patent litigation at UC Berkeley Law School. Mr. Reines is dedicated to supporting disabled veterans rights via pro bono advocacy, and he recently joined the Board of Directors of Grateful Guitars, a non-profit that donates guitars—modeled on those used by legendary jam band musicians—to up-and-coming and struggling musicians.
Dr. Walter earned a B.Sc. degree from the University of Utah, a Ph. D. degree from University of California Los Angeles, and a J.D. from UC Berkeley Law School, where he was Order of the Coif. He is the author of over a dozen scientific publications in areas including bacterial genetics, gas phase ion chemistry, and computational chemistry. During the 2008-09 term, Dr. Walter clerked for the Honorable Joseph J. Farnan in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.
