State university drafts policy governing use of drones
Client(s) State university
Jones Day assisted a state university in drafting a university policy governing usage of drones/unmanned aerial systems on campus and other university-owned property. The policy was developed in response to the FAA's Final Rule in June 2016 relating to commercial drone use.
The policy addressed the process of applying for approval to operate a drone, requirements for remote pilots-in-command, managing the certificate of waiver process with the FAA, insurance issues, securing approval from the local airport and university hospital helipad, and accident reporting requirements. In 2017, the university asked Jones Day to update the policy based on comments from the university community and additional FAA regulatory developments.
