Los Angeles County and former District Attorney prevail at trial defeating claims brought by current and former District Attorneys alleging adverse employment action for their union participation
Client(s) Los Angeles County
Jones Day successfully defended Los Angeles County and former District Attorney Steve Cooley in an employment discrimination case brought by former presidents of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys (ADDA), Steve Ipsen and Hyatt Seligman. The ADDA is a union organization that represents Los Angeles County deputy district attorneys. Plaintiffs alleged that they were subjected to punitive transfers and other adverse employment actions in retaliation for their exercise of First Amendment rights. After a twelve day trial in Federal District Court, the jury deliberated less than two hours before returning a unanimous verdict in favor of the defendants on all claims and all causes of action.
