Carla Gharibian represents clients in complex investor-state and commercial arbitrations spanning a wide range of disputes, including contract and treaty-based claims as well as claims under foreign laws. She also advises clients on international trade issues, including compliance counseling.
Carla has represented clients in complex, high-value investor-state and commercial arbitrations under the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), and International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) rules. Her experience spans a range of sectors and industries, including oil and gas, mining, and steel.
In addition, Carla has advised clients on economic sanctions programs administered by the U.S. Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). Her experience in this area includes providing guidance on a variety of export and sanctions-related risks in proposed transactions.
Carla currently serves as co-editor of the international arbitration chapter of the American Bar Association International Law Section's annual Year in Review publication.
While in law school, Carla served in the East Bay Community Law Center and the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, which provide pro bono legal services to the Bay Area. During this time she worked on a variety of matters, including asylum proceedings and criminal records remedies.
