Jones Day named a Law360 Regional Powerhouse in Illinois

Jones Day was named a Law360 2024 Regional Powerhouse for Illinois. Over the last year, lawyers in Chicago collaborated with their colleagues throughout the Firm on billions of dollars in acquisitions across a wide range of industries while also successfully litigating prominent state and federal bet-the-company cases.

Recent achievements include securing a complete defense jury verdict in first-ever smoking and health suit tried in Chicago; a summary judgment filing that led to adverse parties dropping a putative class action alleging violations of the Illinois Biometric Privacy Act (BIPA); and earning a favorable settlement after replacing another law firm to lead a highly publicized retrial following a $228 million verdict against the company for another BIPA matter.

The Firm also advised on the acquisition and financing for an electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant located in Illinois as part of an expected $2 billion investment in the facility; successfully defended a nationwide antitrust class action lawsuit brought against a trade association and national real estate franchisors related to commissions paid in millions of residential real estate transactions; and advised a Chicago-based global private markets investment manager in more than 20 secondaries transactions and co-investments in the United States, Europe, and Asia with an aggregate transaction value in excess of $1 billion.

"We have an outstanding group of talented and committed lawyers both in Chicago and around the Firm," said Tina Tabacchi, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's Chicago Office. "We have been fortunate over the years to have developed strong partnerships with our clients with operations within Illinois and those facing legal issues here. We are proud of the results we have been able to deliver to our clients and our efforts to make Chicago a great place to live and work through our civic engagement and service to our community."

Considerable pro bono work from the Firm's Chicago Office included work for survivors of human trafficking and child victims of online sexual exploitation. The Firm also partners with the National Immigrant Justice Center on asylum work that has included pro bono assistance to families facing expedited deportation proceedings, clinics to assist immigrants in completing their application for asylum, and representation of individual asylum seekers through the merits phase of their proceedings.

Other notable accomplishments include Jones Day's Hon. Ann Claire Williams (Ret.)—the first judge of color to sit on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit—creating Jumpstart, a pre-law school program for first-generation law students and those from communities that are historically underrepresented in the legal profession. Ms. Williams has been honored by The American Lawyer with an award for Lifetime Achievement and an American Bar Association (ABA) Presidential Citation at its recent annual meeting in Chicago. The Firm is also a long-time supporter of Illinois Holocaust Museum, and this year it named Michael Gray its Humanitarian Award recipient for commitment to education about the dangers of hatred, prejudice, and indifference.

Jones Day is a global law firm with more than 2,400 lawyers in 40 offices across five continents. The Firm is distinguished by: a singular tradition of client service; the mutual commitment to, and the seamless collaboration of, a true partnership; formidable legal talent across multiple disciplines and jurisdictions; and shared professional values that focus on client needs.
