Qualcomm sues Apple for patent infringement on inventions for power saving techniques for mobile devices

Jones Day represented Qualcomm Incorporated against Apple Inc. in a patent infringement lawsuit relating to power saving techniques for mobile devices. The Qualcomm asserted patents disclose and claim technologies that allow a smartphone to connect to the internet more quickly when turned on, allow more efficient downloading of data for applications, and allow graphics processing to be more power efficient. Jones Day served as co-counsel for pretrial proceedings in this case where a San Diego jury found that Apple infringed all three patents and rejected Apple's contention that one of the patents was invalid for failing to name a purported inventor. The jury awarded Qualcomm over $30 million in damages for Apple's infringement.
The lawsuit settled in April 2019 when Qualcomm and Apple reached a global settlement of all litigation between the companies worldwide. The settlement included payment by Apple to Qualcomm, a six-year license agreement with a two-year option to extend, and a multiyear chipset supply agreement.
