Venezuelan political activist obtains asylum
Client(s) Client S
A Jones Day trial team successfully persuaded a Chicago immigration judge to grant asylum for client S based on past persecution for her political opinion by the Venezuelan government. Client S was an active member of an opposition political party and worked for an opposition party mayor. As a result of her political activity, she experienced multiple death threats and surveillance by colectivos, an armed paramilitary group that is part of the government’s security apparatus. Client S fled Venezuela in fear for her life after the colectivos violently kidnapped, tortured, and sexually assaulted her. During this incident, the colectivos forced client S at gunpoint to record a video stating that she was paid to protest the government. Following presentation of the evidence at the merits hearing, the Chicago immigration judge granted asylum and the Department of Homeland Security’s attorney agreed not to appeal. Client S was ecstatic with the result and grateful to Jones Day for representing her.
