Jones Day's Christopher Lovrien to lead Firm's Australia Region
Christopher Lovrien has been named Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's Australia Region. Jones Day has more than 85 lawyers across four offices located in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. The Firm's lawyers in Australia, working with colleagues across the world, assist clients in corporate transactions, governance, arbitration, and litigation (including the defense of class actions), competition law and other regulatory matters, ESG, and restructuring. These matters span a broad variety of industries, including energy, infrastructure, banking, private equity and private capital, technology, and health care.
A member of the Partnership and Advisory committees, Mr. Lovrien served as Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's five-office California Region from 2015-2019, and as Partner-in-Charge of the Los Angeles Office from 2011-2014. He is a trial lawyer in the Firm's Business & Tort Litigation Practice who represents corporate clients in high-stakes commercial disputes, class actions, and other mass tort actions. In addition to his litigation matters, Mr. Lovrien has extensive experience representing companies and their boards on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) topics, including in disputes with ESG raters and rankers. He is based in the Los Angeles Office.
"Many Australian corporates are global in their reach and Australia is an important market for many of the Firm's American, European, and Asian clients. As the needs of our clients continue to grow, our world-class lawyers in Australia will play an expanding and ever more important role in advancing their interests," said Gregory M. Shumaker, Managing Partner of Jones Day. "Chris has spent his entire career at Jones Day, has demonstrated exceptional regional leadership, and is relentless in pushing the Firm's market-leading, collaborative approach to client service to Australia and across the world."
Jones Day entered the Australian market in 1998, when it opened in Sydney. In 2014 the Firm expanded to Perth, the capital of Western Australia and a hub of petroleum exploration and mining. As the Firm's client work grew in Australia, including increasingly for Australian corporates and financial institutions, Jones Day opened additional offices, in Melbourne in 2016 and Brisbane in 2018.
"As the 13th largest economy in the world, Australia has a robust rule-of-law tradition that appreciates and values strong lawyers, and it's an important region for our clients," said Mr. Lovrien. "Our clients view Australia as one market and we do too. We have great lawyers throughout Australia, great leaders in each of our Australia offices, and an established track record of recruiting, retaining, and promoting up-from-the-ranks lawyers into the Firm's partnership. I look forward to continuing our growth in Australia with strong coordination among our Australian offices and tight integration between Australia and Jones Day offices across the globe."
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr. Lovrien repeatedly has been recognized as one of the "Top 100" lawyers in California by the Daily Journal, was named a "Trailblazer" by The National Law Journal, and was recognized as a BTI Client Service All-Star. He joined Jones Day as a summer associate in the Washington Office in 1997, and returned in 1999 after serving as a law clerk for the Honorable Jerome Turner, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. Mr. Lovrien relocated to the Los Angeles Office in 2003, and was admitted to partnership in 2008.
