Stephen Cowen represents clients in strategic and bet-the-company matters in cutting-edge industries including aerospace and defense, sports and athletics in higher education and beyond, financial markets, health care, and tech. He represents clients in high-stakes trials and appeals; complex contract, supply chain, mass tort, and trade secrets disputes; and internal and government investigations involving highly sensitive topics and crisis management. In these matters, Stephen routinely counsels and presents to boards of directors and senior management.

Holding an MBA in finance and accounting from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, Stephen has particular experience as lead counsel favorably resolving disputes over complex technology, supply chain cost and damages recovery, and ownership and valuation of rocket, propulsion, and other aircraft technology. His practice also includes litigating and resolving sensitive mass torts and internal investigations in the higher education (including Title IX), athletics, health care, and mortgage sectors.

As a former lead lawyer for Boeing's venture capital unit, he advised on investments in artificial intelligence and autonomous technologies. Prior to Boeing, Stephen was in private practice at a law firm in Chicago.

Before private practice, Stephen clerked for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy at the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Douglas Ginsburg at the U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit. A former intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve, Stephen deployed to Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom. Since 2012, he has taught law school courses at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan on constitutional law and national security.
