Amul Kalia's practice focuses on all aspects of privacy and cybersecurity. From pre-IPO artificial intelligence (AI) technology companies to established critical infrastructure sector entities, Amul works with a broad array of organizations.
Amul advises companies on compliance with privacy, cybersecurity, and consumer protection laws — particularly the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and other state privacy laws, the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and sector-specific privacy and cybersecurity laws. He is particularly adept at understanding the nuances of technology and tailoring his advice to clients' businesses operations.
Amul also works with clients to develop cybersecurity policies and procedures, including incident response policies that account for sector-specific requirements and relevant industry standards and frameworks (e.g., National Institute of Standards and Technology standards).
Beyond counseling, Amul helps clients recover under cybersecurity insurance policies. He represents clients against insurers to recover costs associated with responding to security incidents and defending against lawsuits and regulatory proceedings. He also represents clients in state and federal regulatory investigations related to privacy and cybersecurity issues.
In law school, Amul externed with the California Attorney General's Privacy Unit and assisted with CCPA investigations and enforcement activities.
Before law school, Amul worked for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a leading nonprofit digital rights organization where he spoke and wrote about such issues as encryption, computer hacking laws, privacy rights at the United States border, intellectual property, and legislative proposals to strengthen privacy and cybersecurity laws at the state and federal levels.
Amul is committed to pro bono work. He represented a client in a Ninth Circuit immigration appeals and helped another individual obtain asylum in the United States.
