Jones Day was recognized by Law360 in the publication's 2022 "Practice Group of the Year" awards in three categories: Class Action, Employment, and Health Care. Now in its 13th year, the Law360 awards "honor the law firms behind the litigation wins and major deals that resonated throughout the legal industry in the past year."
Class Action
Jones Day's multidisciplinary trial teams have a track record of successfully defeating and resolving state and federal class actions, including bet-the-company cases across a wide range of industries, products and services, and areas of law. In addition to defeating certification and ending cases before trial, The Firm's teams win class actions at trial. For example, in 2022, as lead trial counsel for a large healthcare system, Jones Day secured a complete defense verdict in a landmark class action seeking over $1.2 billion in treble damages. The case was the largest antitrust class action jury trial against a hospital system. The Firm also secured summary judgment for an oil and gas refiner in two consolidated antitrust class actions where plaintiffs sought more than $72 billion. Many of the cases the Firm handled set precedent. For example, Jones Day's dismissal and appellate victory for a credit reporting company established limitations on the scope of the FCRA and victory for a bank on novel claims benefited the entire commercial lending industry by preserving industry-standard underwriting practices that have been used in connection with billions of dollars in commercial loans.
Employment
This is the third consecutive year that the Firm's Labor & Employment Practice has been recognized by Law360 as a Practice Group of the Year. Our Labor & Employment teams protect clients' abilities to structure their workforces and employment policies in the manner best designed to achieve critical business objectives. For example, in one of the largest and most consequential labor disputes of 2022, lawyers from six Jones Day offices represented the U.S. railroad industry, helping to avoid threatened work stoppages by 100,000 workers that would have gravely imperiled the U.S. economy and drew the personal attention of President Biden. Every five years, a coalition of railroads bargain with the 12 unions that represent their employees. If bargaining fails, the President appoints an "emergency board," which functions as a form of nonbinding arbitration. The most recent bargaining round began in 2019, and culminated in hearings before an emergency board last July. Jones Day prepared and presented the industry's case to the board in this extraordinarily complex matter, with an amount in controversy of over $9 billion. Following the board's report, Jones Day supported the railroads' efforts to reach new agreements based on the board's recommendations.
Health Care
With more than 350 attorneys focused on prominent transactional, regulatory, and litigation health sector matters, the Firm's Health Care & Life Sciences Practice embraces the trends of convergence across health providers and life sciences organizations. We provide clients with a global infrastructure for coordinated and jurisdiction-specific challenges—in matters involving labs; precision medicine; digital health; complex joint ventures and affiliations; and product development, marketing, promotion, and pricing, among others. Last year, for example, a Jones Day team advised City of Hope, a world-renowned, National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer research and treatment organization, in connection with its acquisition of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, a network of oncology hospitals and outpatient care centers across the United States. The combined organizations resulted in the development of one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, with 11,000 employees and almost 600 physicians in California, Arizona, Illinois, and Georgia transforming access and capabilities for cancer treatment across the country.
