Singapore
Jones Day opened its Singapore Office in 2001 and is one of only eight law firms that also have a license to practice Singapore law. Our lawyers have particular familiarity with the legal, investment, and regulatory regimes in Southeast Asia, and many have advised clients in this region for more than 20 years.
The Singapore Office, in close collaboration with Jones Day’s more than 2,400 lawyers in offices worldwide, provides legal representation to clients in Southeast Asia and around the globe. Our lawyers are fully integrated into the Firm’s global organization of more than 2,400 lawyers in offices in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. This integration affords our clients seamless access to all the Firm's substantial legal resources around the world. We represent a diverse roster of clients with a particular focus on corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, financing, and project work throughout the region.
Many of Jones Day’s lawyers in Singapore have been recognized as among the best lawyers in the region by leading legal publications like Chambers, Legal 500, Asia Law Profiles, Asia’s Leading Lawyers, International Financial Law Review’s Leading Lawyers Guides, and The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers.
New lawyers joining Jones Day in Singapore benefit by collaborating with experienced, highly regarded professionals with experience in a number of sectors.

The Singapore Office prefers to hire new lawyers qualified either in the United States or United Kingdom with a license in at least one other country, ideally Singapore, India, or Indonesia. The Firm also favors candidates with a U.S. LL.M. and admission to the New York Bar, and will accept those who have taken the Singapore Bar Examinations. Most of our lawyers have been practicing for at least one year prior to hire, and are bilingual, with fluency in either Mandarin or Hindi and English.
Each associate in Jones Day's Singapore Office receives a wide variety of work assignments and we encourage our associates to develop a "minor" in a second area of practice. We find that this system, while perhaps not as efficient as assigning each associate lawyer to a single practice in a single jurisdiction, develops very well-rounded lawyers. In addition to promoting associates who have risen through the ranks, the office has a solid track record of promoting lateral associates to partner.
New lawyers attend the New Lawyer Academy, an annual event held in Washington, D.C. Each fall, new lawyers assemble from our more than 40 offices around the world to meet and network with each other and learn what it means to be One Firm Worldwide. Our Firm leaders, partners, and associates teach the new lawyers about Jones Day's culture, history, organization, and achievements and lead substantive and interactive training sessions. Every year, our new lawyers take away from the Academy a sense of great pride and excitement about being part of the Firm.
The Singapore Office does not hire summer associates or articling clerks.
In 2013, the Singapore Ministry of Law awarded Jones Day a Qualifying Foreign Law Practice (QFLP) licence, allowing the Firm to advise on Singapore law matters in permitted areas. The licencing application period took place in July and August of 2012, and 23 foreign law practices submitted applications.
What does this mean?
In December 2007, the Singapore government accepted the recommendations of The Committee to Develop the Singapore Legal Sector, headed by Justice VK Rajah, to comprehensively review the entire legal services sector. The most significant set of proposals made by the Committee concerned the liberalization of the legal services sector, in particular the creation of the Qualifying Foreign Law Practice (QFLP) scheme. The QFLP scheme provides for licences to be given to foreign law practices to practice Singapore law in permitted areas, primarily on commercial and corporate matters. Previously, the government permitted foreign law practices to practice Singapore law only within a Joint Law Venture with a Singapore law practice. In December 2008, the government awarded six QFLP licences and Jones Day was awarded one of the six.
The Firm is proud to have been awarded the QFLP licence and believe Singapore law will become more prevalent as the governing law for cross-border transactions in the future. With the continued growth of Asian economies—particularly emerging markets in India and Southeast Asia—we see not only a substantial increase in the frequency and complexity of transactions negotiated from Singapore, but also our Singapore Office taking a leading role in the development of our overall Asia practice. Our ability to advise on Singapore law will enable us to apply our institutional knowledge and experience to all aspects of transactions and disputes.
We do not accept unsolicited resumes from recruiters and are not responsible for fees from recruiters or other agencies except under specific written agreement with Jones Day. We also do not accept or retain resumes that do not relate to a specific, open position or resumes of individuals who do not meet the stated minimum qualifications for the position which has been posted.
