Matt Divelbiss represents policyholders in significant disputes with their insurers. He has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for policyholder clients under directors and officers (D&O), general liability, employers' liability, property, cargo, cyber, and other policies.
Matt regularly counsels policyholder clients regarding their insurance programs, including issues relating to the structure of D&O programs and liability programs based on the Bermuda Form.
In addition to his insurance experience, Matt has defended corporations in disputes over issues ranging from qui tam claims to supply contracts. Matt has been called upon to assist clients in the United States and in foreign countries that face complex e-discovery issues, including helping non-U.S. clients respond to U.S. subpoenas and discovery requests.
Matt's experience includes matters in state and federal trial and appellate courts, as well as foreign and domestic arbitrations, including arbitrations before the American Arbitration Association and in Bermuda and the United Kingdom. Representative clients include Motorola Solutions, UPMC, FirstEnergy Corp., Transocean, and EDMC. Matt has represented corporations in sectors including telecommunications, energy, automotive, health care, and education.
Since 2015, Matt has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he teaches Advanced Trial Evidence, a course that focuses on applying the evidence rules in a courtroom-like setting, and, since 2023, Insurance Law. In addition, he serves as the pro bono partner for the Pittsburgh Office, receiving an Unsung Hero Award for his extensive pro bono work.
