José Estandía has more than 25 years' experience leading M&A and project finance transactions in Mexico's energy sector for clients focused on power, renewable energy, natural gas, and oil terminals. He has extensive experience with renewable projects, representing participants in the negotiation and implementation of power purchase agreements (PPAs); energy coverage agreements (ECAs); engineering, procurement, and construction agreements (EPCs); and operation and maintenance agreements (OMs). José's practice includes counseling oil companies in connection with the commercialization of gasoline and diesel in Mexico. He also serves as the Mexico City Office administrative partner.
José assists clients with the full spectrum of regulatory instruments, policies, grid fees, and criteria imposed upon the electricity industry by the Ministry of Energy (SENER), the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the National Energy Control Center (CENACE), and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). In addition, José advises companies in the electricity industry regarding the local and international protection and defense of their rights related to the implementation of governmental regulations.
José's most recent transactions include the acquisition of several solar power plants with an installed capacity up to 700 MW located in the states of Durango and Zacatecas, Mexico. In addition, he advised a subsidiary of Grupo Iberdrola in the financing of a 220.5 MW wind farm. He also assisted Hoteles Presidente and Grupo Gigante and its subsidiaries as offtakers in the elaboration and negotiation of several PPAs.
José is a member of the Mexican Bar Association and the Mexican Academy of Energy Law (Academia Mexicana de Derecho Energético). He is a coauthor of various articles on Mexican energy topics.
