A first-chair trial lawyer and trusted appellate advocate, Ed Reines has extensive experience in competitor vs. competitor disputes involving the life sciences, biotech, and high-technology industries.
Ed has successfully represented clients in high-stakes disputes for decades. His recent achievements before joining Jones Day in 2025 include overturning a $96 million verdict in a patent case involving genetic technologies, winning a $45 million verdict in a Lanham Act false advertising lawsuit regarding diagnostic tests, a $24 million verdict in a case related to prenatal genetic testing methods with a defense verdict on a $105 million contract claim, scoring a judgment of more than $50 million in a case involving microfluidic technologies, and a complete summary judgment in a sprawling multidistrict patent litigation.
Ed is the recipient of numerous accolades by leading legal publications, including as a top litigator, having been named an MVP by Law360 twice; "General Patent Litigator of the Year, California," by LMG Life Sciences; and among the "Top 100 Lawyers in California" and "Top IP Lawyers in California" by the Daily Journal many times.
Ed is past president of the Federal Circuit Bar Association; past president of the Federal Bar Association's Northern District of California Chapter, where he chaired the N.D. Cal Patent Rules Committee for years and helped pioneer the patent rules used around the country. He also teaches patent litigation at UC Berkeley Law School. Ed is dedicated to supporting disabled veterans rights, and he recently joined the board of directors of Grateful Guitars, a nonprofit that donates guitars — modeled on those used by legendary jam band musicians — to up-and-coming and struggling musicians.
