Michelle Smit is an intellectual property lawyer with a broad range of experience, from case development and preparation of the complaint through the jury verdict and appeal.

She has managed fact and expert discovery, prepared witnesses for testimony, taken and defended depositions, briefed and argued motions, and helped prepare teams for trial. Her primary focus is patent, trademark, and trade secret matters and has assisted clients engaged in technology disputes in a wide range of industries.

In addition to her intellectual property practice, Michelle maintains an active pro bono practice representing asylum seekers through the Firm's Border Project. Before joining Jones Day, Michelle worked as a Public Interest Law Initiative Fellow for Equip for Equality, a nonprofit that protects the human and civil rights of people with disabilities. She is a member of Ravinia's Associates Board, a not-for-profit with a mission to foster more diverse audiences for classical music. Michelle is also an active member of Chicago Women in IP (ChiWIP).
