Paul Hines helps clients find effective solutions to their complex global business disputes. Paul has extensive experience representing clients in international commercial and investor-state arbitrations under major institutional and ad hoc rules, as well as in cross-border litigation in U.S. courts and before U.S. regulators.
Paul has a proven track record of preparing and presenting persuasive evidence and argument before international tribunals and U.S. courts at all stages of the proceedings and is particularly experienced in handling disputes involving complex technical and scientific issues. He has handled disputes arising from transactions and investments in a wide range of industries, including life sciences, banking, oil and gas, renewable energy, mining, construction, wine and spirits, agriculture, and heavy manufacturing. Paul is regularly called upon to help clients navigate post-transactional disputes involving indemnity and insurance issues, earnouts, and purchase price/working capital adjustments, as well as to resolve issues among joint venture partnerships.
In addition to his disputes work, Paul has significant experience in helping clients investigate and resolve international regulatory issues, including economic sanctions and export controls (e.g. OFAC, EAR/BIS) and data breach issues.
Using the experience gained in those adversarial processes, Paul is frequently asked to advise clients on how to plan for, and prevent, disputes before they emerge, as well as on issues of trade compliance.
Paul is a leader in the community of California international legal practitioners who regularly speaks on international disputes issues and is an active member of organizations including California Arbitration and the ICC's California Subcommittee.
