Ed Joyce has extensive experience in insurance coverage litigation relating to professional liability, D&O liability, property/business interruption claims, employee dishonesty, data breach/equipment damage, unfair competition, construction defect, intellectual property, business torts, products liability, employment liability, and environmental liability throughout the United States. He has secured more than $2 billion in judgments/settlements in his representation of policyholders, which include Fortune 500 companies.
Ed represents policyholders in industries such as food and beverage, industrial, retail, real estate/construction, media/entertainment, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, energy, financial services, and municipalities.
Ed previously represented one of the largest employers in Louisiana in litigation regarding a property/business interruption claim resulting from damage to medical facilities caused by Hurricane Katrina; a television station, a financial institution, and a major worldwide restaurant chain in litigation regarding property/business interruption claims resulting from the events of September 11, 2001; and the city of Englewood, Colorado in a landmark victory for policyholders in which the Colorado Supreme Court ordered insurers to defend the city against environmental claims.
Ed handles professional liability/director and officers liability claims and has served as insurance coverage counsel to debtors in high-profile bankruptcy proceedings. He regularly speaks on insurance coverage issues to the media and at industry functions and has been invited to speak at the Risk and Insurance Management Society's (RIMS) Annual Conference for the past 30 years.
Ed is a member of the board of directors of the Fordham Law Alumni Association. He currently serves as its Immediate Past President and as a member of its executive committee. Ed is also a member of the board of directors of the Columbia College Alumni Association.

Represented Ochsner Clinic Foundation, one of the largest employers in New Orleans and Louisiana, in an insurance coverage litigation in Louisiana federal court regarding a $90 million first-party property/business interruption claim resulting from physical damage to 36 of Ochsner’s medical facilities caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Represented Rank Group Plc. (Hard Rock Café) in international litigation regarding its business interruption claims for the New York and Washington, D.C. Hard Rock Café restaurants as a result of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Represented RAG American Coal Holding, Inc. in two major property damage, extra expense, business interruption claims following a mine fire and an explosion.
Represented Paxson Communications Corporation in multistate litigation regarding its property damage, business interruption and extra expense losses incurred as a result of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Represented WellCare Health Plans, Inc., an HMO, with respect to errors and omissions liability claims under policies sold by AISLIC arising out of wrongful acts alleged by one of WellCare’s sales/marketing agents. The case was argued before the Florida District Court of Appeal.
Represented PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, seeking errors and omissions coverage for a US$182 million verdict resulting from a claim brought by the receiver for Ambassador Insurance Company.
Represented Hartz Mountain Industries, Inc. in litigation regarding a competitor’s wrongful act claims under a directors and officers liability insurance policy, and in litigation regarding construction defect/property damage claims under a CGL insurance policy.
Represented Calpine Corporation with respect to directors and officers liability insurance claims involving multiple securities class actions and ERISA actions.
Represented Warnaco Group, Inc. with respect to directors and officers liability insurance claims involving a competitor’s wrongful act claims, multiple shareholder securities class actions and an SEC investigation.
Represented a brewing company’s claims for coverage under D&O and fiduciary liability policies for securities class actions and ERISA actions.
Represented manufacturer in two-week trial in Roskam Baking Company v. Northern Ins. of New York regarding insurance coverage for property and business interruption claims resulting from a catastrophic fire resulting in a judgment in excess of US$10 million.
Represented municipalities in Compass Ins. Co., et al. v. City of Littleton & City of Englewood, a landmark victory for municipalities and policyholders in insurance law, in which the Colorado Supreme Court ordered insurance companies to defend the cities against environmental claims at the Lowry Landfill.
Represented construction company in Weitz/Citadel v. Tokio Marine & Fire Ins. Co., et al., in which a Florida federal court ordered Tokio Marine to defend Weitz/Citadel against construction liability claims.
Represented major steel manufacturer in litigation involving first-party and business interruption claims resulting from an explosion at one of the steel manufacturer’s facilities.
Represented beer manufacturer in Adolph Coors Co. v. American Ins. Co., in which a Colorado federal court sanctioned Liberty Mutual for its “hardball litigation,” and ordered Liberty to defend Coors’ environmental claims and subsequently ordered Liberty to pay Coors’ insurance coverage attorney fees.
Represented shipbuilder in Avondale Indus., Inc v. Travelers Indem. Co., a landmark victory for policyholders in insurance law in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Represented Connell Limited Partnership in Connell Limited Partnership v. Dayton Industries, Inc., a product liability case successfully argued in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
