Adept at mastering complex technologies, Albert Liou has over 13 years of experience representing clients in high-stakes patent and trade secret litigation matters, as well as intellectual property transactions and licensing. In a recent federal court litigation for a global software company, Albert guided the client through all phases of an extensive, multi-year discovery period, which culminated in a summary judgment win on both of the core claims in the case. Albert has also handled significant matters for clients in the semiconductor, financial, automotive, petrochemical, and other industries. In addition, he regularly counsels clients on open source licensing compliance and on open source and other intellectual property issues in transactions.
Albert is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and has handled multiple inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He is a regular contributor to Jones Day's PTAB Litigation Blog.
Albert previously served as a volunteer prosecutor for the City of Houston Municipal Courts, where he tried 12 cases to verdict. He is currently the chair of Jones Day's Pathways to Law Program, which provides volunteer legal instruction to middle school students at Pilgrim Academy, a 98% economically disadvantaged school in Southwest Houston. He serves on the board of directors of the Asian American Bar Association of Houston, where he is a past president. He has also previously served as Houston Intellectual Property Law Association's chair of its Annual Institute on Intellectual Property Law.
